Beginning to Respond

Choose a short passage from your novel that made an impact on you as you read it, that made you stop and think maybe even say "Oh wow" to yourself.  It may have made you stop and think because you made a personal connection. It may have made you wonder and ask a question. It may have made you react in some emotional way to the words on the paper.  In your response, quote the passage and list the page number that it can be found on.  Explain, in detail, why you chose this passage, what reason did you have that made you stop and think or had you reacting in some way. Include your feelings and emotions as well as state any connections you made (text to self, text to text, text to world). An example  from another novel of how to start is this:
"Big signs were posted at the pool saying"No Jews or Dogs Allowed". pg 14
As I read this passage I couldn't believe that this could happen. How could the Jewish even be compared to dogs?"

  8. One of my wow moments was when the Germans forced the Jews to wear yellow stars with the word Jew printed on them on there clothes.pg 34
First the Germans made the Jews have a J stamp on there passport and know they have to wear a yellow star that says Jew on it I can not believe that. The Germans are taking all of the Jewish peoples rights away.

How the Germans just broke in and looted the store and the government did nothing is heart breaking. When the dad said he worked all his life getting his reputation up and getting trusted. This would be a heart breaking moment for every thing to just be taken away from you. This is one of many strong details.

  13. So far I have had many questions and wows about what the Natzis are doing to the Jews. The Natzis did not allow the Jews to go into pools, they made families watch other family members slowly get weaker and starve to death and killed the younger and older Jews who were not able to work to provide products for the Natzis. Reading this book has made me very emotional about the things some people did and still do, just because of other people's religion, race and gender. I wonder if Daniel survived and was able to see any of his family again?

    1. @Cookie Monster - some thoughtful reflection. Was there one are two direct quotes, passages that you thought really showcased the tragedy at the time? Is there a section that is a true example of what persecution is? Use these in your response as well as your thoughts.

Why do you think people turned on another group of people? COuld this happen overnight or would it take awhile? I wonder what in Hitler's leadership allowed people to follow him and do the things they did? So many questions.

    2. @Cookie Monster-I feel the same way about this book because I hate how the Jews are being treated so unfairly compared to the German's.

Good reflection and you are right people do very mean things. I think it would be scary to live in the Jews world but the thing is that I live in the same world. We as the new generation do some of the same things that Hitler did to the Jews. We are mean to other people just because of coulor, race, gender, and religion.

  25. A passage that I read that really stuck out was when Auntie Leah and Daniel's parents had to decide which children to try and save. Just the thought of my whole family and I sharing a bowl of soup is eye-opening. I feel so grateful how wonderful my life is and all the things I have, unlike the Jews and some people out there in third world countries. If I was in the same situation as Oma Miriam I would probably do the same. It seemed she lived a pretty good life and with the Germans she probably wouldn't have been alive for much longer.

  38. I just finished Daniels Story and I loved it! I couldn't believe it though when they started putting large masses of bodies in a pit and just lit then on fire because the gad chambers were not fast enough. They said in the book that over 25,000 jews died everyday, whether it was because they were a child, or because they were elderly. When Auntie Leah got shot because she did not want to leave her children I couldn't believe how casual the book made it seem.

  39. *SPOILER ALERT* I am so glad that Rosa and Daniel were reunited. I think that Rosa was one of the critical characters and that she kept Daniel going while he was in Aushwitz and Buchwald. I imagine that since Daniel had lost SO many people that if he didn't have that promise to Rosa that he would meet her back at the apartment in the ghetto of Lodz that he would have thrown himself into that pit with all the other people that had given up hope because they had nothing to live for.

GET UP GET WORKING YOU LAZY IDIOT! the officer screamed. The child tried, but obviously he couldn't get up. The officer emptied his gun into the child's body."

This was a jaw dropper because to miss only one piece of dirt and lose your life for it was scary and even when he did get shot the first time the boy tried to get it but was not given enough time.

What would you do if you got shot in one of your legs would you try to get up or just give up.

  50. Pg. 107-108, There was a tall fair SS man, with his tall blonde wife and their two blonde blue eyed children. The children, both girls, were dressed in frilly white dresses- Probably stolen from some poor dead Jewish families I thought- the mother in a stylish blue dress and heels, the father in his SS uniform. They arranged them smartly in front of the camera and followed Karl's instructions to the letter. They looked so content, so well fed, the model of a perfect family. The father kissed the children pleasantly when the pictures had been taken. The perfect model father.

The "perfect" family. What do you get when you take that mans uniform and gun away from him? Well it seems to me like he's a liar. What if your little girls best friend was jewish? But oh wait that would never happen because you would never let your child ever come in talking distance with a jew. Blonde haired and blue eyed, 'perfect' did you ever notice that barbie dolls are blonde haired and blue eyed? Barbies are considered perfect today, when and where did barbies begin manufacturing? The truth is that all Hitler was doing was trying to make Europe perfect, yet he was brown haired and eyed. What was Hitlers stressor that activated that much hate of the world? What did his parents look like? Did they have something to do with Hitlers deep hatred of Jewish people? Hitler was obviously insane but what drove him to that insanity? Was it the war itself or was it his deep need for perfection. I kind of feel like a profiler from the show Criminal Minds, trying to find out what in Hitlers life was making him want to kill all of these innocent people. I am very curious about his life as a child and his state of sanity when the war started to when the war finished.
